Como Park Self-Guided Tree Identification Trek

Como Park Self-Guided Tree Identification Trek

The Environment Committee of the Como Community Council, as part of its educational activity, has organized a self-guided, pictorial tree identification program. Our intention is to introduce Como Park users to the variety of interesting tree flora in the park, some of which are quite unique. Understanding some of our tree species will lead to a greater appreciation of the botanical treasures found in the park.

The Magnolia (cucumber tree) is an unusual tree for Minnesota that was planted by past horticultural designers. Other unusual trees include Ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, catalpa, black walnut, and Kentucky Coffee Tree. Each of the trees is signed with additional information. The location of each tree can be found on the accompanying map (click here to download PDF). We recommend that you start with the green ash by the fountain, although you can start wherever is convenient.
