District 10 Como Community Council

2022-23 Como Sub-District 4 Lawns To Legumes Project

We are excited to announce that the Como Community Council was awarded the Lawns to Legume Demonstration Neighborhood Grant through the Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR)! A group of community members linked to the Environment Committee proposed a plan for pollinator habitats throughout the Como Sub-district 4 Community. The neighborhood between Como Ave, Front Ave, Lexington Pkwy and the railroad tracks will receive up to 5 boulevard gardens, 4 bee lawns, a community pollinator garden, and a pocket prairie.

Through this grant, we will be hosting community meetings to educate neighbors on pollinator habitat installation, pesticide-free maintenance, and how to get involved in the grant work that will be done between May 2022 and May 2023. These meetings will be open to the public and all may participate.

Funding is provided by the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund (ENRTF) and is targeted in priority areas to benefit the rusty-patched bumblebee and other at-risk species.

Latest Updates

Projects have been moving very quickly for the Saint Paullinators.  August is going to be a big month for the South Como neighborhood. Applications were accepted this month and we now have 9 new site hosts (four bee lawns & five boulevard gardens).  Installations will be happening throughout August – look for “Future Home of a Lawns to Legumes Pollinator Habitat signs going up as you walk through the community.

The Orchard Rec Center Community Pollinator Garden was installed on July 27th by Sacred Spaces.  The Saint Paullinator group had a picnic that evening to celebrate the work that went into getting that installed.  We hope to see pollinators flying in very soon!

If you’re interested in volunteering to help with these habitats, we have a few opportunities:

  • We’re in need of “Garden Buddies” – gardeners with 2+ years of pollinator gardening experience that could be a resource to our site hosts.
  • Garden Stewards – we have a group that helps to water (and soon weed) the Community Pollinator Site.  This is currently a once a week commitment.

The Saint Paullinators are excited to announce that they have chosen an installer for the Community Pollinator Garden at Orchard Rec Center (875 W Orchard), the boulevard gardens, and bee lawns.  Sacred Spaces will be taking on the large task!  They are a local organization whose mission is to create beautiful gardens by focusing on native plants to increase wildlife habitat and rewild the urban landscape.   A goal very much aligned with the Saint Paullinators and the Lawns to Legume Grant. Maddie and her team will be installing the spaces starting late July through late August.

If you’re interested in volunteering, hosting a pollinator habitat, or helping plan upcoming community events, please fill out the form below!

The Saint Paullinators of South Como are currently working in groups to keep the Lawns to Legume project moving forward.  From  choosing which installers to work with through planning more Neighborhood Pollinator Meetings, the group welcomes community members in whatever capacity they have.  If you’d like to take part in one of the group, be notified about upcoming events or work days, or apply to be a pollinator site with a boulevard garden or bee lawn, please fill out the form below or join the Saint Paullinators Facebook page to connect with others in the neighborhood and for helpful gardening tips and resources.
