Sunday Series Cancelled
In accordance with the State of Minnesota’s health advisories, the Como Community Council is cancelling the remaining Sunday Series presentations originally scheduled for March 15, 22, and 29. Here are the presentations we hope to reschedule at a future date:
- Nature in Your Own “Backyard.” John Moriarty, author of “Field Guide to the Natural World of the Twin Cities,” highlights some of his favorite natural places in the metro, Ramsey County, and Como Park. Along the way, you’ll learn natural history facts for local plants and animals, and get tips on getting the most out of your own backyard habitats. Bonus: The turtles of Como Lake.
- Old Media in a New Era. As more people get their information from social media sites, as daily, weekly and monthly local newspapers scale back or fold altogether, what’s the future of local news? A panel discussion with Kelly Smith from the Star Tribune, Tesha Christensen from the Como Midway Monitor, and Scott Carlson from the Park Bugle.
- In Search of Justice. Ramsey County District Court Judge DeAnne Hilgers discusses the purpose and promise of bail reform and the juvenile detention alternatives initiative.
Sunday Series presentations are free, run from 1-2:30 p.m., and include plenty of time for Q&A.

- Trash or Treasure. Want a simpler and less cluttered life? Are you curious about unexpected things you can donate (and things you should never donate?) Come find out! This presentation will walk you through how to declutter by curating what you want to keep as well as where to donate and do good with the things you no longer need. Laura Gilbert is an author and daughter of collector parents. Learn how she made sure the buck (and hutch) stopped with her. Jennifer Victor-Larsen is the founder of Donate Good Stuff. She is excited about massive environmental impact through reuse, and loves connecting people with real needs in their communities. Where: Como Park Streetcar Station, 1224 Lexington Parkway N. - “Minnesota Stories in a Changing Climate.” This hourlong documentary, from Will Steger’s Climate Generation, features six stories about how climate change already is changing our state. After the film, Climate Generation’s Sarah Goodspeed will facilitate discussion. The presentation is in partnership with the Saint Paul Public Library’s Read Brave Documentary Film Series and the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory.
- Forgotten Como History: The 1917 Saint Paul Winter Carnival was arguably the biggest and best rendition in the event’s celebrated history. The city had revived the winter festival the year before, paying homage to the past and promoting its future. In 1917, organizers upped the ante: hosting epic-scale parades, world-class ski jumping, and the Red River Derby — a 522-mile dogsled race from Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Saint Paul. When that race finished at Como Park, an incredible spectacle unfolded. Among 10,000 viewers, the finish gave rise to an unlikely hero. Join local writer Drew M. Ross and hear what happened.
