Know Your Como History: Exploring Como – Between the Tracks
By Laura Oyen
Last summer two St. Catherine University students, Eva Ngono and KC Meredyk and their Advisor, Associate Professor Rachel Neiwert, assisted the Como Neighborhood History Project in historic research and community member interviews in the study of Subdistrict 4. Collecting and recording the stories about the neighborhood and community members who lived in this area, between the railroad tracks, was the focus for the summer of 2023. Documenting stories of our community for future residents is what this project is all about.

Via phone or video conferenceFirst Wednesdays at 7pm
The first Wednesday of every month typically hosts our Environment and Neighborhood Relations committee topics for discussion and planning, as well as guest presentations related to those issues. Occasionally time sensitive Land Use and Board/Organizational items are included on the agenda as well. These meetings are open to the public and are offered hybrid in-person at the Como Streetcar Station (1224 Lexington Parkway) as well as on zoom. Environment Committee (1st Wednesdays)
This committee oversees environmental protections and sustainability initiatives in the community, especially those affecting Como Lake. Members helped set up the Capitol Region Watershed District, the Como Woodland Outdoor Classroom, and the food scraps recycling site on Beulah Ln. It frequently sponsors educational opportunities on topics such as composting, pollinator habitat, and eco-friendly yard care.
Neighborhood Relations Committee (1st Wednesdays)
These committee members deal with fun stuff (such as our annual Ice Cream Social and other community events) and not-so-fun stuff (such as crime prevention and safety). This is the committee that oversees outreach to new community members, members who are not as connected to the neighborhood as they could be, and develops the tools to help us all build stronger neighborhood cohesion.
