Minutes 5/2011

District 10 Environment Committee

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

Attendees:  Val Cunningham, Sharon Shinomiya, Sally Worku, Susan Jane Cheney

Val Cunningham called the meeting to order at about 7:05 p.m.

April 2011 meeting minutes were approved.

Como Lake turtle studies

  1. Susan Jane, Sharon and Val have been counting basking turtles almost daily since the beginning of May; the study will continue through August.  Susan Jane will meet with Sally and Deb Robinson to discuss the study protocol.  Data noted include date, time, temperature, general weather conditions, wind presence and direction, and number and species of turtles in each of the 13 lake shore sectors (defined by Parks Environmental Services for the lake shore restoration).
  2. The first of two turtle trappings by Como Zoo staff for the purpose of species identification is occurring this week; a second trapping is scheduled for the end of May.  More volunteers for setting, checking and removing traps would be helpful.  A question about frequency of trap checking was raised, and Susan Jane will check into this.

District 10 garden tour (Saturday, July 17)

Mike has two gardens on board for the tour and is hoping for many more participating gardeners.

Tree recognition program

Sharon reported that two trees have been nominated to date.  Deadline for submission is 5/28, and notification will take place in late June.  Val has priced “appreciation” lawn signs at $16.00 each.

Rain barrel workshop

Five people have signed up for the workshop so far.

A suggestion was made for a fall e-blast reminder to drain rain barrels to prevent cracking over the winter.

Como Woodland Outdoor Classroom (CWOC)

CWOC liaison Susan Jane reported that plans the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Fireplace Rededication will take place tomorrow (5/19).  For more information about the CWOC, check their website: www.comowoodland.org.

Summer shoreline work sessions

Discussion of hands-on work sessions on the Como Lake shoreline in lieu of at least one summer meeting took place.  Susan Jane will talk with Mike about coordinating an event with Meghan Manhatton at Environmental Services and perhaps also contact Janna Caywood from the Como Lake Neighborhood Network and Kelly Dinsmore, Parks Education Coordinator.  Recommendation is for district or even city-wide participation.

Hike It! program

Val highly recommended participation in this Legacy-funded program, designed to encourage public appreciation and enjoyment of regional parks, this year featuring Bruce Vento and Lilydale.  Kelly Dinsmore has developed the guided (free) hour-long tours and employs an interpretive approach to conveying historical, cultural, geographical and geological information about these areas throughout the summer season.  Check this out!

The meeting adjourned at about 7:35 p.m.
