Minutes 11/16/11

District 10 Environment Committee

Wednesday, November 16, 2011

Attendees:  Sharon Shinomiya, Chet Mirocha, Dick Vian, District 10 Organizer Jessica Bronk, Susan Jane Cheney

Jessica called the meeting to order at 7:07 p.m.

October 2011 meeting minutes were reviewed and approved.

Como Lake turtle basking study

Susan Jane reported that she is entering study data on a spread sheet and writing up general observations and conclusions; she will e-mail the latter to other data collectors to review and enhance.

Como Park tree tags and map

Chet Mirocha reported that a group of 7- to 12-year-old Montessori students is interested in the 2012 tree trek.

Spring 2012 seminars

Discussion continued regarding developing a series of public seminars for spring 2012, including Como Park history (February), by local resident and historian Roger Bergerson; attracting butterflies and moths to your garden (March), by horticulturalist and wildlife photographer Heather Holm; and landscaping tips (April), by landscape architect Erik Olsen.  Sharon reported that all three speakers are on board.  She will contact North Dale Rec Center as a venue for March and possibly April; St. Tim’s Lutheran Church is another possibility for the latter event.  Val Cunningham will arrange for Lyngblomstem in February.  Various avenues for effective publicity and publication deadlines were discussed.

District 10 community garden

Jessica mentioned that she has had several phone and e-mail inquiries regarding development of a community garden within the district.  The group discussed possible locations, with an emphasis on primarily rental areas where residents lack gardening space, such as Bandana Square.  Jessica shared some on-line information about starting a community garden.  She will contact St. Paul Garden Coordinator Mark Grandlund and will recruit members for a gardening group.  A suggestion was made to look into partnering with an adjacent district – Districts 6 or 12.

Como Woodland Outdoor Classroom (CWOC)

CWOC liaison Susan Jane Cheney reported that oak savanna planting sessions with Great River School students (ages 12 to 14) took place on 10/26, 11/2 and 11/16.  Parks Environmental Services staffperson Meghan Manhatton led two tours of the proposed CWOC trails for the advisory group review in November.

For more information about the CWOC, check their website: www.comowoodland.org.

New business

Jessica reported that none of the District 10 Board members has expressed interest in chairing the Environment Committee.  She will continue to run the meeting in the interim.

The meeting adjourned at 8:15 p.m.
