Minutes 10/19/11

District 10 Environment Committee

Wednesday, October 19, 2011

Attendees:  Val Cunningham, Sharon Shinomiya, Chet Mirocha, Mike MacDonald, Susan Jane Cheney

Mike MacDonald called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m.

September 2011 meeting minutes were approved.

Como Park tree tags and map

Chet Mirocha reported that he plans to lead another tree trek in 2012.  Mike suggested submitting an article regarding Como Park tree identification and the tour for inclusion in the District 10 spring newsletter.

Como Lake turtle study

Susan Jane reported that she is still working on a spread sheet using data from the May - August basking survey and writing up general observations and conclusions drawn from the study.

Spring 2012 seminars

Discussion continued regarding developing a series of public seminars for spring 2012, including Como Park history (February), by local resident and historian Roger Bergerson; attracting butterflies and moths to your garden (March), by horticulturalist and wildlife photographer Heather Holm; and landscaping tips (April), by landscape architect Erik Olsen.  Val reported that Roger has agreed to the February presentation, and she will call Erik; Sharon volunteered to contact Heather.  Seminar scheduling was debated, and Sunday late afternoon seemed to receive the strongest support.  The Streetcar Station and Lyngblomstem are possible locations.  Suggested publicity tacks include: announcements in Midway Historical Society, Ramsey County Historical Society, Horticulture Society, Audubon, Wild Ones, and District Council (especially Districts 6 and 12 as well as 10) websites -- and newsletters if available; and the District 10 e-blast.

Capitol Region Watershed District (CRWD)

CRWD Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) member Mike MacDonald reported that the CAC toured the Trillium site in the vicinity of the intersection of 35E and Maryland Avenue, where the CRWD and City of St. Paul are working on a joint project to daylight a stretch of Troutbrook stormwater in a new city park.

Como Woodland Outdoor Classroom (CWOC)

CWOC liaison Susan Jane Cheney reported that upcoming CWOC events include oak savanna planting sessions with Great River School students (ages 12 to 14) on Wednesday afternoons (10/26, 11/2 and 11/16) from 1:00 to 3:00.  Adult volunteers are needed to help supervise planting of prairie grasses and forbs.  Contact Parks & Rec staffer Andy Rodriguez at Andy.Rodriguez@ci.stpaul.mn.us if you are interested in assisting.

New business

Mike MacDonald reported that the idea of a District 10 community garden was brought up at the most recent board meeting by District Organizer Jessica Bronk.  She has received several inquiries from residents and has learned of existing gardens in other districts.  Possible locations were discussed briefly, and an Energy Park site suggested, noting the prevalence of apartment dwellers and a potential tie-in with Great River School as well.

The meeting adjourned at 7:55 p.m.
