Neighborhood Relations & Safety Committee
Minutes
January 12, 2012
Historic Streetcar Station

Members Present: Betsy Wehrwein, Ted Blank
Members Excused: Laurie Erickson
Staff Present: Jessie Bronk

The meeting was called to order at 7pm.

This was the first meeting of the newly merged Neighborhood Relations and Safety Committee, following the Board decision to combine the two committees at its December, 2011 meeting.

The committee discussed and approved changes to its Charter to better reflect the new structure and combined roles (attached). It discussed the different stakeholder groups within the community, reflected on the desire to enhance engagement, and the efforts currently underway, including Block Clubs and the annual Staycation.

The Committee also began developing a Work Plan for 2012 in support of the new Charter. It is planned to be completed at the next meeting, but areas of focus are to include:
• Supporting and enhancing existing programs, including the Staycation and Block Clubs
• Opening and enhancing communications with District 10 businesses, non-profits, and government institutions
• Conducting some type of a District needs assessment or survey

In light of the ongoing work needed to complete this, the Committee elected to postpone the housing forum planned in February to a future date and to compile a good start of a list of District businesses, non-profits, and government institutions by its next meeting.

Jessie Bronk provided the new Committee members with an overview of the Block Club program and its role in promoting neighborhood safety, citing recent well-publicized criminal incidents as examples of how it works well and how additional neighborhood participation could strengthen it.

The meeting adjourned at 9pm.

Future meetings will be held on the second Thursday of each month, at 7pm at the Historic Streetcar Station.
